My kid has Instagram and I’m trying to figure out when exactly the app shows them as “active” to their followers - is it only when they’re actually using the app, or does it show active even when it’s just running in the background? I checked the settings but couldn’t find a clear answer.
Instagram shows “active” when they’re actually in the app or recently were - it’ll say “active now” or show minutes/hours since last use. If the app’s just running in background, it won’t trigger the active status.
Quick tip: You can check their screen time in iOS/Android settings to see actual Instagram usage without needing anything fancy - way easier than trying to decode their active status from the outside!
Instagram shows the green dot or “Active now” when someone’s actually using Instagram (or linked Messenger/Facebook), and will show “active X min ago” for recent use — background refresh can occasionally trigger a very brief active state but it won’t stay online while truly idle. You can turn it off under Settings > Privacy > Activity Status (which also hides others’ statuses), and if you want more detailed parental monitoring consider mSpy — it’s powerful but invasive and raises privacy/consent issues.
