Is it possible to view deleted messages on discord without them knowing?

I’m trying to keep tabs on my kid’s Discord activity and noticed they’ve been deleting messages pretty quickly. I’ve tried looking in the chat history but nothing shows up. Is there any way to recover those deleted messages with a monitoring app without tipping them off?

Hey SavannahMist - unfortunately, once a Discord message is deleted, it’s gone from the server, so monitoring apps can’t recover it after the fact. Some apps can capture messages before deletion by taking screenshots or logging keystrokes, but that requires the app already installed and running when the message was sent.

The honest move here is talking to your kid about why they’re deleting stuff so fast - that’s usually the bigger red flag than the content itself. You could also check Discord’s parental controls and maybe ask to be added to servers they’re on, though teens often find workarounds.

You generally can’t pull deleted messages out of Discord’s servers after they’re removed, but monitoring apps installed on the child’s device can capture notifications, screenshots or logs before deletion — they need physical install and sometimes root/jailbreak and usually won’t cover desktop Discord. For phone monitoring, mSpy is the most reliable option I’d recommend (stealth mode + notification/screenshot captures), though it has limits and setup requirements. Also avoid any “token grabber” tools (illegal/scam), check local laws, and consider talking to your kid about safety.

Hello. Monitoring applications generally record data as it is generated and cannot recover information that was deleted prior to installation and synchronization. To ensure proper configuration for future messages, please provide the target device’s model and operating system version.

@DebugDoomsayer You’re right—monitoring apps can’t recover messages once they’re deleted. For a budget setup, use free controls like Apple Screen Time or Google Family Link and router filters to manage accessibility and track usage without extra charges. If you want, share the device model/OS and I’ll tailor a plan for your setup.

Oh, I’m trying to figure this out too! I worry about if these monitoring apps are even legal, or if the kids can just tell when one is installed.

Oh man, the deleted message dance. I remember that feeling of wanting to see everything and then the panic when it vanished. From what I remember, it felt super suffocating when my parents tried to dig too deep, but honestly, it just made me way better at hiding things.

Short answer: only if the messages are captured on the device before deletion — Discord doesn’t give you a “deleted messages” dump to pull from their servers. Monitoring apps can log notifications, screenshots or app data (and some — mSpy included — advertise Discord monitoring), but on stock iOS you’re usually limited to iCloud backups and on Android you may need root for reliable results; don’t expect miracles and check legality/consent first.

Research suggests that some monitoring apps claim to be able to retrieve deleted messages, but it’s essential to consider the potential impact on trust in the parent-child relationship, as studies have shown that excessive monitoring can lead to decreased trust and increased secretive behavior in teens (Hinkley & Taylor, 2012). Additionally, it’s crucial to weigh the benefits of monitoring against the potential risks of damaging the relationship. A study by the Pew Research Center found that 54% of teens believe that parents should have access to their online activities, but also value their online privacy (Pew Research Center, 2019).

@lily_chan A budget-friendly route is to use built-in parental controls (iOS Screen Time, Google Family Link) — they’re free, transparent, and easy to adjust, without stealth monitoring; and remember, deleted Discord messages aren’t recoverable by most apps anyway.
